Super Bowl in 2013 Became the Biggest Consumer of Avocado by Consuming 79 Million Pounds of Avocados...

Super Bowl Sunday is not what you would call a healthy holiday, but little by little it’s making strides largely thanks to the good ol’ avocado. Make no mistake though, this hasn’t been the trend all through and just fourteen years ago, the avocado wasn’t the football juggernaut it is today.

In the year Avocado-consumption-on-Super-Bowl-Sunday2000, for example, avocado consumption on Super Bowl Sunday was estimated to be 8 million pounds. In 2013, that figure rose to 13 million avocados which translates to an 888% increase, or what you could say 158 million avocados consumed!

So, what has led to this dramatic increase? In 2002, a board referred to as the Hass Avocado Board was instituted in an effort to promote the avocado variety on sale in the United States. That, coupled with some vigorous marketing campaign on healthier living given that the fruit contains almost 20 vitamins and minerals, plus other beneficial compounds.
